STANDARD 6:                        Valued Status

 

Dandenong Valley Job Support Inc. recognises that each person with a disability has the opportunity to develop and maintain skills and to participate in activities that enable him or her to achieve valued roles in the community.

 

DVJS acknowledges that the most contributing factor for a person with a disability to participate in the wider community and achieve valued roles within it is by obtaining employment for consumers that meets their work interests, work capacities and goals.

 

Dandenong Valley Job Support Inc. will ensure that each person with a disability has the opportunity to develop and maintain skills and to participate in activities that enable him or her to achieve valued roles in the community in the following ways?

 

Ø  Promoting a positive image to our consumers that they are being supported by a professional and committed agency by having qualified staff and ensuring that results are obtained.

 

Ø  Promoting the positive aspects of employing people with disabilities to employers focusing on what consumers ?can do? rather than ?can?t do? via employer newsletters, regional advertising etc.

 

Ø  All consumers will receive a quarterly newsletter informing them of what is happening at DVJS and seeking their input and suggestions about improving DVJS.

 

Ø  Consumers are sent once every 12 months a survey asking for their input about the service they are / are not receiving.

 

Ø  To ?match? consumers to positions that not only suit their work interests, work capacities and goals but also to consider the value and integrity of the job. This can be measured upon the basis of (1) that the job is of legal standing and (2) would someone else take the position (without a disability)?

 

Ø  Providing onsite support and training to assist the consumer learn the job tasks required and become a valuable employee.

 

Ø  Provision of post-placement support (maintenance) and training to the consumer to enable the consumer to develop additional skills and their career path with either their current employer or potential employer.

 

Ø  Providing opportunities for consumers to have direct input into the services and management of DVJS, so that they have a degree of control of the programs and management of DVJS.  This is achieved via consumer representation on the Committee of Management.
