Success Stories 1. Safety Equipment Management Services (SEMS) is a small business that supplies pumps for drip feeding to hospitals. Scott started last year in the cleaning and repairs role and has now progressed to be undertaking Cert 2 in Electronics to further develop his skills. He started on 8 hours per week and now may work up to a 38 hour week. This is evidence of the skills a person can gain once given the opportunity to work and encouraged to reach their individual potential. The Manager of SEMS contacted DVJS after he saw a young 16 year old with a disability at a company next to his business was given the opportunity to build timber storage units and progressed so quickly and gained so much confidence that he decided he also wanted to give a DVJS jobseeker a go. Scott started on basic cleaning of the units and George assisted to develop his skills to include electrical fault diagnosis and repairs which he is now also learning at TAFE. With the expansion of business and the success of Scott a second person from DVJS has now started and is assisting in producing and developing the company web site. 2. Work Place Modification Scheme ? How it can Benefit you. Taajan is a 48 year old man with a degenerative condition in his legs that has now confined him to a wheel chair. He is a qualified fitter and turner with vast experience in the manufacturing industry. As a result of his disability Taajan required seated work and came to DVJS with the goal of obtaining a position with an empathetic employer. Taajan was originally offered a position assembling quadrants one day a week for Smooth Flo, a company which supplies the Air conditioning industry. After establishing a rapport with the employer over several months Taajan saw an opportunity to perform other duties within the factory. These duties however required a specialised work station to be manufactured to enable Taajan to perform the duties in a safe and efficient manner. A call was made to DVJS for assistance with Workplace Modifications. DVJS then called upon the services of a Specialist Design Engineer who accompanied the DVJS Maintenance Officer to the work site. In consultation with both Taajan and the employer the Engineer came up with the design and specifications for a work station. The work station would be used in conjunction with a modified lifting trolley to enable Taajan to assemble the components in a safe and efficient manner. DVJS submitted the quote for Workplace Modifications via the On Line application process and approval for funding was granted shortly afterwards. The work station was manufactured and installed within a short time frame and Taajan commenced his new duties. Taajan was happy as he had received an extra day a week within the factory environment that he was most comfortable in. The employer was also happy as the work station and lifting trolley had been supplied and installed at no cost to them. A subsequent application and workplace modification is now underway that will enable Taajan to perform more duties within the factory and provide him with another two days a week. Smoothflo and Taajan are both happy as the modifications have enabled Taajan to work and his employer is happy with that! |
