DVJS / School to Work Transition Program

Aim
The aim of the School to Work Transition Program (SWTP) is to prepare students with disabilities who are wishing to leave school within the next 6 months develop REAL skills, REAL experience and hopefully secure ongoing employment in their chosen field.  Many school leavers are faced with difficulty finding a job when they leave school a time that is very stressful for them and their families.  By linking with DVJS before leaving school, this anxiety can be overcome as employment may be found prior to leaving school.

Whilst still attending school DVJS will;
1.   Arrange work experience for at least one day per week for 4 weeks with a local employer in the students chosen
      employment field.
2.   Provide case management to the student to support them with any issues or barriers identified at the workplace.
3.   Support the student at work with a trainer to ensure that the student meets expected levels of production, quality
      control and integrating in the workplace until the student no longer requires support.
4.   At the conclusion of the 4 weeks work experience negotiate with the employer the opportunity of employing the
      student part time for at least 8hrs a week under a wage subsidy administered by DVJS for up to 26 weeks
      (depending on amount of subsidy available). If employment with an employer is not continuing after the 4 week work
      experience, DVJS will search for another placement where hopefully employment is more likely to continue.
5.   Continue negotiations with the employer regarding ongoing employment after the wage subsidized period for career
      planning opportunities such as traineeships and apprenticeships (for those students intending to leave school).
      Students will continue to remain at school when participating on program until they are ready to leave or may
      exit the program if they change their mind about leaving school or gaining employment.
