STANDARD 4 Privacy, Dignity and Confidentiality Dandenong Valley Job Support recognises that each consumer has a right to; Privacy, Dignity, and Confidentiality in all aspects of their life and that it is upheld and respected in the service delivery that DVJS offers. Dandenong Valley Job Support Inc. will ensure that: Ø All information regarding consumers will be maintained and adhered to in accordance with principles of the Privacy Act (1988). All consumers will be read a privacy statement ?Use of Your Personal Information at DVJS? during their intake, which will be discussed with them so that they are aware of how their information is used and secured. Copies will be made available upon request. Ø Consumers are informed of the information DVJS requires to obtain about them during the intake phase of their program. DVJS acknowledges that given some consumer information may need to be obtained from the consumers? medical, school or other service provider reports that their consent to obtain this information will be sought. Consumers will be asked to sign ?Information Release? forms giving DVJS permission to contact the relevant service providers concerning their employability, work capacity etc. Ø DVJS will only discuss or release information about a consumer to other services or individuals (including family members when the consumer is over the age of 18) when the other service or individual provides to DVJS an Information Release form/ statement signed by the consumer allowing DVJS to do so. Ø Consumers are assigned a case manager specifically to them. Each case manager has either their own private office or access to one where consumers can discuss matters with them in private. Ø In order to provide appropriate support and as a duty of care, consumers must inform DVJS of their disability(s). DVJS will seek permission from the consumer to disclose information to an employer about their disability. In circumstances when a consumer does not want their information passed on to employers, then DVJS will be unable to job search for the consumer and will assist the consumer conduct their own jobsearch. The consumer will be required to undertake their own job searching if they request DVJS not to disclose information to potential employers. It should be noted that program delivery (mainly job placement/ maintenance) may be limited in the event that a consumer does not wish to inform a prospective employer of their disability. Ø Each consumer is welcome to discuss their particular needs with a staff member of their choice and may request these discussions take place in private. Consumers are not watched, listened to or reported upon without consent in any aspect of the program. Intrusion into their personal activities is kept minimal, and written information kept on file is confined to only material that is relevant and necessary towards achieving employment. Ø Management and staff demonstrate their commitment to treating consumers with respect as they interact with consumers in a positive manner and recognise that their role is to advocate and promote the capabilities of consumers to enable them to achieve their goals. For example, during job searching, the staff member will discuss the consumer's disability with a prospective employer in a positive manner highlighting the consumers skills and abilities that they will bring to the workplace rather than addressing any limitation caused by their disability. Ø Staff are sensitive to the dignity of the consumer, and refrain from engaging in idle gossip about consumers on the program. Use of InformationØ Information about a consumer is limited to only that which is relevant and necessary during their involvement with the service. Any information that is not considered relevant to the service will be discussed with the consumer, and will either be given to the consumer or shredded. Ø Use of information about the consumer is limited to only DVJS staff. Information is stored securely at the end of each business day or when the file is not in use. Ø Withdrawn Consumer information is archived securely for seven (7) years at which time it will be shredded. |
